Did you know that you could be more susceptible to allergies during the menopause? When hormone levels alter, your immune system may react differently to allergens which wouldn’t have affected you previously. The body’s line of defence is to produce more histamine – the chemical that is released by your body if there is an injury or irritant because it thinks it’s protecting you from something harmful. This can result in symptoms such as itchy eyes, sneezing or swelling.
Some of the conditions or allergies you may suffer from include:
Skin rashes
The reduction in oestrogen may affect you skin with it becoming irritated and dry. Speaking to a healthcare professional is a good idea as they can recommend some over the counter remedies to help soothe any irritation.
If your skin is feeling more sensitive, avoid using any perfumed products/detergents on your skin and clothes. Opt for natural alternatives for your body, both inside and out.
Asthma
Oestrogen can be an asthma trigger for some women. It’s not yet clear why but it could be because it increases inflammation in the body and affects the airways. Asthma symptoms can get worse during peri-menopause so it is really important you speak to your GP about any changes you find in your symptoms or condition.
Hayfever
You may find during the Spring and Summer months that you are experiencing hayfever for the first time. Again, there are plenty of remedies available from pharmacies and health stores including anti-histamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops which should be able to provide some relief.
Always speak to someone about any new symptoms you experience, no matter how big or small you think they are, there’s plenty of help and information out there even if just for peace of mind.
